Classic CD Choice - Philip Smith-New York Legends

""This exceptional disc gets off to a cracking start with Bruce Broughton's electrifying Concert Piece for Eight trumpets, and never looks back. Philip Smith unleashes a staggering range of expression in Joseph Turrin's bewilderingly eclectic Intrada (Turrin also provides another eight-trumpet cracker with his Festival Fanfare), yet can magically sustain the finespun legato of Enescu's Légende and Gershwin's Someone to Watch over Me. Henri Tomasi's microcosmic Triptych is also dispatched with effortless aplomb, Eric Ewazen's magical Trio for Trumpet, Violin and Piano surely deserves to be more widely known, while the six-trumpet skit on Thompson's There's a Great Day Coming ends the recital in a blaze of corporate virtuosity. Wow!"Classic CD Choice ***** December, 1998"
